2017 Chevrolet Spark vs Competitors
While they haven’t been around long, subcompacts are a quickly growing class of cars – and their size and efficiency are perfect for city driving. But without a solid history behind each model, how can you find the subcompact that’s right for you?
Don’t worry: we’ve done the heavy lifting for you. Check out how several new subcompacts stack up against one another.
Subcompacts are known for their affordability, and you can probably see why. These three cars have some of the lowest sticker prices you’ll find on any road-ready vehicle. Of course, price isn’t everything: it’s also important to see how each performs, and whether they’re actually a solid value.
These subcompacts offer up a deceptively big ride in a tiny package. With a solid I-4 engine and respectable horsepower + torque, the 2017 Spark is perhaps the best-rounded of the three – though the Ford Fiesta can pack slightly more raw power when outfitted with its 1.6L engine option. Mitsubishi’s new Mirage is unfortunately rather lackluster by comparison.
Long-term, fuel costs can be one of the most expensive parts of vehicle ownership. Subcompacts are a smart choice for that very reason. The Mitsubishi Mirage takes the lead for overall efficiency, though all three models here are nearly equal – and well ahead of most cars on the market.
With their larger frames, the Mitsubishi Mirage and Ford Fiesta straddle the line between subcompact and sedan, while the Chevy Spark is perhaps a “truer” subcompact. Those with gear to move should note the available cargo volume in the Spark is considerably lower – though if you’re hauling much more than groceries on a regular basis, you might consider a larger type of car in general. When fully occupied, the 2017 Spark actually works out to be the roomiest, per person, of the bunch.
Subcompacts are often ahead of the curve when it comes to safety engineering, and these three cars are no exception. Each has earned a 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The 2017 Spark sports a full assortment of 10 standard airbags – more than either of its rivals here – as well as some features (like a rear-vision camera and 5-year OnStar plan) that would be paid extras for other models. Unparalleled in-class protection means your most precious cargo will stay safe, and may even qualify you for reduced insurance premiums.
